Alia Bhatt’s ‘Jigra’ is an adaptation of Sanjay Dutt and Sridevi's 1993 classic 'Gumrah’: Report | Hindi Movie News Filmymeet

The recent teaser of Jigra, featuring Alia Bhatt, has generated considerable buzz amongst the fans. It showcases Alia in a gritty, action-oriented role, different from her previous performances that often leaned towards drama and romance. The video features intense scenes where Alia’s character fights against formidable odds, embodying the spirit of a fierce protector.
Turns out, this movie is a modern day adaptation of a classic 90s epic! According to Bollywood Hungama, Jigra is inspired by Gumrah, which starred Sanjay Dutt and Sridevi and was produced by Yash Johar. This 1993 release narrated the story of a man who went to great lengths to save his lover, who was imprisoned in a foreign country. Jigra makers have reportedly decided to remake Gumrah, but with certain modifications.
Jigra is described as an intense thriller that revolves around the theme of sibling loyalty and sacrifice. Unlike Gumrah, where the central plot involved two ardent lovers, Jigra flips this narrative by showcasing a sister, played by Alia Bhatt, who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue her brother, portrayed by Vedang Raina. Interestingly, Gumrah was directed by Mahesh Bhatt, Alia’s father, creating a unique connection between the two films.
Jigra is backed by Dharma Productions and Alia Bhatt herself, alongside her sister Shaheen Bhatt. The film marks the second project for their production company, Eternal Sunshine Productions, following the success of Darlings in 2022. Directed by Vasan Bala, Jigra promises a blend of action and emotional storytelling that is characteristic of contemporary cinema. This film is set to hit theatres on October 11.
