Subhash Ghai reveals AR Rahman and Anand Bakshi could not communicate while working on 'Taal': 'Anand Ji didn’t know English, and Rahman didn’t know Hindi'

The iconic film ‘Taal‘, featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, and Akshaye Khanna, celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. The movie is renowned for its timeless music and promising plot. In a recent discussion, director Subhash Ghai opened up about musician A.R. Rahman and lyricist Anand Bakshi collaborated to transcend language barriers.
In a chat with Radio Nasha, Subhash Ghai shared an amusing anecdote about the initial meeting between music composer A.R.Rahman and lyricist Anand Bakshi while working on ‘Taal’. With neither party fluent in the other’s language—Bakshi did not know English and Rahman did not know Hindi—Ghai placed a harmonium between them, hoping for a musical exchange. “When I first made Anand Bakshi and A.R. Rahman meet, Anand ji didn’t know English and Rahman didn’t know Hindi,” he revealed. However, after 15 minutes of silence and hesitation, he recognized the communication gap that existed between the two creative minds.

Despite the initial communication challenges between A.R. Rahman and Anand Bakshi, Subhash mentioned that they ultimately found a way to collaborate effectively on the music. He noted that their first song, ‘Kariye Na,’ showcased this creative partnership, with Rahman composing the music first and then Ghai bringing it to Bakshi to write the lyrics.
In the same chat, Subhash revealed that A.R. Rahman was paid minimal fees for composing the music for ‘Taal’. Rahman humorously responded to this disclosure, laughing and saying, ‘Let’s not go there!’.

‘Taal’ will have a re-release in theaters on September 27.
