Aamir Khan admits he still harbors one regret about his role in 'Sarfarosh' Filmymeet

Sarfarosh‘ released in 1999, tells the story of ACP Ajay Singh Rathore, played by Aamir Khan, a determined police officer fighting terrorism. The film addresses Pakistan’s ISI’s proxy war realistically. Aamir Khan‘s portrayal of the principled cop and Naseeruddin Shah‘s strong performance as the antagonist were highly acclaimed. Sonali Bendre and Mukesh Rishi also delivered noteworthy supporting roles. The movie was both a critical success and a box office hit, praised for its gripping storyline, realistic action scenes, and outstanding performances. It remains a significant film in Bollywood history.
“Sarfarosh” marked its 25th anniversary with a special celebration where the film’s stars reunited. Aamir Khan, Sonali Bendre, and Naseeruddin Shah, key figures in the cast, gathered for a memorable screening event to commemorate the milestone.
Fans still consider Aamir Khan’s “Sarfarosh” as one of his best movies. Recently, Aamir attended a special screening of the action thriller in Mumbai along with Sonali Bendre and Naseeruddin Shah. During the event, Aamir talked about how his role as a police officer in the film was unique compared to typical cop roles in movies. He also mentioned one regret about his character that still bothers him.
Aamir mentioned, “Actually this might be true for mainstream cinema. Like the film made by Govind ji [Nihalani], Ardha Satya. That was a great cop film. But by and large in mainstream cinema we do no usually get to see a kind of film like Sarfarosh.”
Aamir also noted how the character he portrayed was distinct from typical roles seen in the industry. He added, “That is one of the strengths of the film. Whenever I meet a police constable they always say how they love this film. How real it feels. That’s the strength of the script and John [Matthew Matthan] as a director. He kept it as real as possible and still making it exciting and thrilling.”
Aamir then went on to say that he still has one regret about the role, he said, “I was really disturbed about one thing while shooting the film. I was in continuity with a couple of films that time. Toh main apne baal chote nahi kar paaya jitna mujhe chota karna tha. Toh woh baat mujhe itni disturb karti thi. Aaj bhi jab main apni film dekhta hu toh mujhe lagta hai ki, ‘Yaar, ye scenes dobara nahi kar sakte?’ (I was not able to cut my hair short and this bit disturbed me a lot. Even today when I watch the film, I go, ‘Can’t we redo these scenes?) Luckily I was supposed to be in plain clothes so yeah we tried to pull it off.”
Next, Naseeruddin said, “Aur agar Bollywood mein policeman ka mould Aamir Khan nahi toh aur kaun todta (If not Aamir Khan then who else would have broken the mould of the policeman)?”
On the work front, Aamir will appear in “Sitaare Zameen Par,” alongside Genelia Deshmukh and Darsheel Safary.
