Akshay Kumar addresses rough patch: ‘Industry friends and critics question my choice of films on sanitary pads and toilets’ | Hindi Movie News Filmymeet

There’s no doubt that Akshay Kumar has been facing a challenging phase, with his recent films struggling to make an impact. This year, his movies Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Sarfira have caused financial losses for their producers with its disappointing run at the box office. Despite these setbacks, Akshay continues to choose films with meaningful themes.
In a recent interview with India Today, Akshay discussed his film choices and the criticism he has faced. He mentioned that his upcoming film Khel Khel Mein continues his trend of addressing important social issues, but with a comedic twist.
He explained, “Somethings (films and the subjects they discuss) look so good and lovely that your heart would want to do it. Many people in the industry, including my friends and (movie) critics, have asked ‘Why do you have to make films on sanitary pads and toilets.’ When I made a movie on sex education, a lot of people opposed me, ‘sex’s a bad thing to talk about.’ But I like to do such movies and will keep on doing them if given the opportunity.”

In the past 4 years, Akshay has faced nearly 9 flops. At the trailer launch of Khel Khel Mein, he responded to a reporter’s question with his characteristic humor, saying, “I receive messages saying, ‘Sorry yaar, don’t worry. Everything will be okay.’ Abey mara nahi hoon, jo bhi kamata hoon apne dum par kamata hoon. Kisi se kuch manga nahi hai abhi, tere mein dum hai tu le ke aa abhi (But I’m not dead yet! Everything I achieve is through my own efforts. I haven’t asked anyone for anything. If you have the strength, you go ahead and bring it in yourself).”
His past works include Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), which addressed sanitation issues, Pad Man (2018), which highlighted the need for affordable sanitary products, and OMG 2 (2023), which focused on sex education. He has also portrayed real-life heroes in films like Airlift (2016), Rustom (2016), Mission Mangal (2019), and Mission Raniganj (2023).
