Sharing the spotlight with global heavyweights like Scarlett Johansson, YouTuber Marques Brownlee, artist Lawrence Lek, AI comedian King Willonius, and tech moguls Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, and Satya Nadella, Kapoor’s inclusion is nothing short of legendary!
Anil’s inclusion in TIME’s AI list comes just a year after his major legal victory in September 2023.
The Delhi High Court had issued an interim order preventing 16 entities from using his name, voice, image, or personal traits for commercial purposes without permission. Kapoor’s action was spurred by the widespread misuse of morphed videos and emojis featuring his image and his famous “jhakaas” catchphrase, made popular in his 1985 film Yudh.
The Bollywood star emphasized that the legal action was not just for his own protection but also to ensure that his family could safeguard and benefit from his persona in the future, even when he’s no longer around. He shared these thoughts during an interview with Variety at the time.
Kapoor clarified that his goal was not to hinder anyone’s freedom of expression or punish them. Instead, he aimed to protect his personality rights and prevent misuse for commercial purposes, especially given the fast-evolving technology and advancements like artificial intelligence.
In recent months, several actors have fallen prey to deepfake videos. A particularly eerie deepfake featuring Alia Bhatt and Rashmika Mandanna went viral, while AI-generated clips of Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh making controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi also captured significant attention during this year’s elections.
