Music composer AR Rahman is globally known for his music. Actor Anil Kapoor recently revealed that the rumour that Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle heard the hit song from ‘Taal’ is true because Boyle himself told the actor about it. Rahman wrote a great soundtrack for the 1999 film, which was directed by Subhash Ghai and it is still remembered today.
During a special anniversary event hosted by Radio Nasha, it was mentioned that Danny Boyle had wanted to collaborate with Rahman ever since the CD of ‘Taal’ soundtrack reached him.Rahman won two Academy Awards for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ including Best Original Score and Song.
Anil Kapoor shared, “That’s what Danny told me. That he had heard the music of Taal and loved it. He happened to see me in the film also, so somewhere I was there on his mind. But obviously, he wanted (initially) someone else. When he refused, he came to me!”
The superstar Shah Rukh Khan was the “someone” Anil Kapoor was referring to when he declined an offer to star in the Oscar-winning movie. In the musical drama, Anil portrayed the role of a game show host.
AR Rahman recalled that even music icon Andrew Lloyd Webber had contacted him after listening to the album, and he remarked that ‘Taal’ was a turning point in his career because it opened the doors for worldwide collaborations.
Rahman recalled, “Taal CD was played to Andrew Lloyd Webber by Shekhar Kapur. That brought him to the theatres to watch Taal. That’s one of the reasons which made him call me to write the musical Bombay Dreams.”
‘Taal’ also starred Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who were not present at the special event where Subhash Ghai disclosed that Rahman received a “minimum fee” for the movie.
