Anupam Kher reveals he nearly went bankrupt, recalls incident when police laughed after his car was stolen

Anupam Kher, a celebrated actor in Indian cinema, recently revealed the financial struggles he faced in the early 2000s, which nearly led him to bankruptcy. Despite his success in films, Kher encountered severe challenges around 2003-2004, when he was on the verge of losing both his home and office.
In a conversation on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Kher recounted how, this challenging phase was compounded by an unfortunate incident when his car was stolen right outside a temple, which he humorously described as turning his misfortune into a comedic moment for the police officers involved.
Anupam Kher’s journey to fame was not devoid of struggles. He shared that in 2003-2004, while he had already made a name for himself in the film industry, he faced severe financial difficulties. “In my attempt to become a TV tycoon, I almost went bankrupt,” Kher revealed. Despite his success in films like ‘Saaransh‘, ‘Ram Lakhan‘, and ‘Dil’, the pressures of business ventures almost cost him everything. He recalled, “At that time, I was already established and doing good films, but both my office and house were on the verge of being sold.”
Kher’s troubles escalated when he decided to visit the Mahalakshmi temple to pray for better fortunes. He reminisced about his earlier days as a struggling actor when he would frequent the temple seeking divine intervention for success. However, after achieving fame, he stopped visiting, believing that perhaps God was displeased with him due to his negligence.
During this challenging time, his car was stolen outside the Mahalakshmi temple. “I left the car running and stepped out to pray,” he explained. As he prayed, a thief drove away with his vehicle. When he reported the incident to the police, they couldn’t stop laughing, saying it felt like a scene straight out of a movie. Kher’s resilience shines through as he continues to thrive in his career.
Despite these setbacks, Anupam Kher has enjoyed a prolific career spanning several decades and has become synonymous with powerful performances in Indian cinema, such as ‘Tezaab’, ‘Lamhe‘, ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, and will be next seen in ‘Emergency’ directed by Kangana Ranaut.
