Ayushmann Khurrana opts out of Sunny Deol starrer ‘Border 2’ as ‘he felt unsure of his positioning’: Report Filmymeet

The original ‘Border,’ released in 1997, is a cult classic that depicted the Battle of Longewala of 1971. It starred Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, and Akshaye Khanna, among others. The film’s powerful narrative and performances have left a lasting impact on Indian cinema, making the sequel highly anticipated.
In June 2024, Sunny Deol surprised fans by announcing ‘Border 2’ on social media, celebrating the 27th anniversary of the original film.He expressed excitement about returning to a character that resonates deeply with audiences, stating that a soldier is coming back to fulfill a promise made long ago.
Ayushmann Khurrana was initially in discussions to portray a soldier in ‘Border 2,’ a sequel to the 1997 classic directed by JP Dutta. However, he decided against taking the role due to concerns about his positioning within the ensemble cast, which prominently features Sunny Deol. A source revealed to Mid-day that while both Khurrana and the filmmakers were enthusiastic about the collaboration, the actor felt uncertain about how he would fit into a project dominated by Deol’s towering presence.
“Ayushmann was in talks to play a soldier in the sequel. While both Ayushmann and the makers were keen on collaborating, the actor felt unsure of his positioning in an ensemble led by Sunny Deol, a towering star in his own right. ”
Khurrana’s decision has sparked conversations among industry insiders and fans alike. Many speculate that his choice reflects a broader trend among actors regarding their roles in ensemble films, particularly when sharing the screen with established stars like Deol.
Border 2 is set to be directed by Anurag Singh, known for his successful film ‘Kesari.’ The film’s production is being led by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta. The team has been working diligently to ensure that the sequel meets the high expectations set by its predecessor.
Following Khurrana’s exit, rumors have emerged regarding other potential cast members, including Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh. The same source noted that while nothing is confirmed, Dosanjh has been approached for a role. The combination of Dosanjh and Deol on screen could attract a significant audience, particularly in North India. The film is expected to begin shooting in November 2024.
