Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 2 October 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. His father’s name was Munshi Sharda Prasad and his mother’s name was Ramdulari. Shastri’s father was a teacher in a primary school, after that his father took the job of a clerk in the revenue department. Shastri Ji was the youngest son of his parents, so everyone affectionately called him ‘Nanhe’.


When Shastri Ji was only 18 months old, his father died. Shastri Ji received his initial education from his maternal grandmother, after that Shastri Ji took his education from Kashi Vidyapeeth. Shastri Ji had received the honorary title of Shastri in Kashi. Shastri Ji was married in the year 1928 to Lalita Shastri, daughter of Ganesh Prasad, a resident of Mirzapur. Six children were born after the marriage, in which there were two daughters and four sons.


Shastri Ji’s Political Life

Shastri Ji did his graduation in Sanskrit language and after completing his education Shastri ji had joined the Swayam Sevak Sangh, and from this, he had resolved to do true service to the country. In his political life, Shastri was a true Gandhian who lived his whole life with simplicity. Shastri was a socialist and often helped the poor.


Shastri ji used to be a participant in all the important programs and movements of the Indian freedom struggle. Shastri ji took part in the Non-Cooperation Movement with Gandhi in 1921, the Dandi March in 1930 and the Quit India Movement in 1942. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose had given a slogan to the Azad Hind Fauj at the time of World War II, seeing England being badly entangled, “Delhi Chalo”. Then Shastri ji, along with Mahatma Gandhi, had issued an order to leave India and do and die from Mumbai in the night of 1942 itself.


In the year 1942, Shastri ji went to Allahabad and upon reaching he had cleverly changed the Gandhian slogan of this movement to die, not kill, due to which this movement had taken a terrible form. Shastri was arrested on 19th August 1942, after coming to Allahabad in 1929, Shastri ji started working as a Swayam Sevak Sangh along with Tandon ji. At that time Shastri ji lived in Allahabad. It was from this that Shastri and Pandit Nehru had a deep friendship. At the time of Nehru, Shastri was posted as Home Minister in the cabinet and after the death of Nehru, Shastri became the second Prime Minister of India.


Shastri as Prime Minister

After the country’s independence, Lal Bahadur Shastri was made the first acting Railway Minister of India. In the meantime, a terrible train accident happened, on which Lal Bahadur Shastri said that “If any such incident happens while I am Railway Minister, then I am responsible for it.” After this he immediately resigned from the post of Railway Minister. With this decision, the whole country came in support of Lal Bahadur Shastri, even the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru praised the decision of Lal Bahadur Shastri in the Parliament and said that with such an honest image, a new direction will be started in the people.


After the sudden demise of Nehru in 1964, due to his honest image, Shastri ji was made the second Prime Minister of India on 9 June 1964, then faced many difficulties as a Prime Minister during the tenure of 18 months and then 1965. There was a sudden attack on India by Pakistan, on which the then President called an emergency meeting to deal with the national calamity, in which all the three army chiefs and Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri were involved, then Shastri ji clearly called the three parts of the country. Was, that now the time has come, you should protect your country. Pakistan army was defeated in the war.


Mysterious Death of Lal Bahadur Shastri

Lal Bahadur Shastri went to Tashkent to sign the peace agreement by Russia and America, but he was ready to sign on the condition that the land won by India would not be given again to Pakistan. Lal Bahadur Shastri ji agreed to sign the ceasefire letter, after that the war stopped and after some time Lal Bahadur Shastri ji died in mysterious circumstances at midnight on 11 January 1966.


The post-mortem was not even done to find out the real status of Shastri ji’s death. Only news was spread all over the world, that Lal Bahadur Shastri died of heart attack, which has not been disclosed till date. According to his wife, who accompanied him, Lal Bahadur Shastri was poisoned, because after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, his body had turned blue and thus the mystery of Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death remains even today.
