Kabir Khan’s Chandu Champion, starring Kartik Aaryan, is currently garnering rave reviews for its storyline and performances. However, the movie has had a lukewarm run at the BO, in terms of ticket sales. Recently, Kabir Khan reflected on the initial box office performance of the movie.Despite a slow start with a first-day collection of Rs 5.4 crore, the film has shown growth and amassed Rs 30.12 crore in its first four days.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Khan acknowledged the lower-than-expected opening and attributed it to the complexities of post-COVID audience behavior. He said, “It is too early to say what are the reasons but post COVID it has become very difficult to analyse logically what is happening in terms of the behaviour. The opening was definitely lower than what we all were expecting because of the tremendous response to the trailer, to the song units that were out. So one would expect a slightly healthier opening but that didn’t pan out the way we wanted to.”
Despite the early setback, Khan expressed confidence in the film’s long-term prospects, propelled by positive word of mouth and audience appreciation. Drawing inspiration from Petkar’s resilient spirit, Khan affirmed, “We believe strongly in the film and are overwhelmed by the love it has received. Just as Petkar faced challenges head-on, we are optimistic that the film will overcome these initial hurdles.”
Reflecting on his career, Khan said it is important to look beyond the opening weekend to gauge a film’s true impact. He highlighted that while some blockbusters fade quickly from memory, others endure based on their lasting influence and cultural resonance.
Chandu Champion is based on the real-life tale of Murlikant Petkar, who was India’s first Paralympic gold medalist.
