Chhaya Kadam has mixed feelings, as her film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ became India’s official Oscar entry into the Oscars while her other film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ was excluded. The actress, who has played crucial roles in both films, expressed her disappointment about the exclusion of ‘All We Imagine As Light‘ from the Oscar race.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Chhaya expressed that as an artist she aims at good work, however, she is unsure why the Payal Kapadia directorial was excluded from the Oscars. She also stated that she had expected the film to make the cut following its historic win at the Cannes Film Festival.
Kadam also spoke about the rules and regulations behind the selection process, and added that she has no idea ‘what went behind’ this snub. Though ‘All We Imagine As Light’ was shortlisted by France, the film lost out to ‘Emilia Pérez’, a 2024 Spanish-language French musical crime comedy, written and directed by Jacques Audiard.
The actress also added that she is still grateful that the film received so much love at Cannes, and won the Grand Prix.
While reacting to her film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ directed by Kiran Rao becoming India’s official entry for the Oscars, she said that it was a ‘moment of pride’.
After the announcement, Kiran Rao said in a statement, “I am deeply honored and delighted that our film Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life. Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope that this film will resonate with audiences across the world, just as it has in India.”
