Rumours have been circulating online that Joaquin Phoenix allegedly referred to ‘Joker: Folie a Deux‘ as “horrible” following its Cannes premiere early this June.
Amidst negative reviews pouring in on social media and poor ‘D’ ratings, a video from Cannes has now gone viral. Netizens attempted to lip-read Phoenix’s supposed comment in a brief moment when he turned to talk to his co-star Lady Gaga.
The video sees the lead actors, along with director Todd Phillips standing and appreciating the audience for giving them an 11-minute standing ovation as the film’s end credits rolled on the big screen.
While there is no verified evidence or direct statement supporting this allegation, netizens claim that Phoenix turned to Gaga to share his review and said, “It’s horrible.” Gaga reacts to his comment by laughing and nodding her head saying ‘No’.
“Someone should use that ai lip reader that i keep seeing on here to figure out what they were saying….it almost looks like joaquin said, ‘it’s horrible'” read the viral tweet which has garnered over 4.5 million views.
It must be noted that Phoenix, has not publicly criticized the film, nor has his co-star Lady Gaga. Meanwhile, director Phillips defended his movie and revealed in his latest interview with IGN, explained, “The first film is called ‘Joker’, not ‘The Joker’. And in the script, it was always labelled ‘An origin story,’ never ‘THE origin story.’ It’s about the idea that maybe this isn’t the Joker we know. Maybe he’s just the inspiration for the Joker.”
The film is a follow-up to the billion-dollar 2019 film ‘Joker’, which has been hit by bad reviews which reportedly affected the box office business. The film opened in theatres to a worldwide collection of $121.1 million.
