Before making his film debut, Aamir Khan fell deeply in love with Reena Dutta. In an effort to impress her, he did something quite dangerous. During an earlier interview, Aamir revealed that he wrote a love letter to Reena in his own blood. Reena was understandably upset with him, and in hindsight, Aamir recognized why she reacted that way.
In a 1999 interview with Simi Grewal, Aamir Khan was asked about writing letters in blood. He responded, “Well, once [I wrote a letter in blood], after which I was appropriately put in my place by her. She didn’t like it at all. She was quite upset with me.” When asked what made Aamir do that, he shared that it was his immature way of interpreting love. “You know, I was young, and I thought that… I thought it’s a way to express the deep love that I have for her, but today I feel that… I mean, I hear of a lot of kids doing that, and I receive a lot of letters in blood, and I think that’s not a nice thing to do. You don’t need to do that to express your love for a person, so I wouldn’t advise youngsters to do that,” he said.
In the same conversation, Aamir Khan recalled that he and Reena Dutta eloped when he was 21 and she was 19. Their parents were unaware of their relationship, and Reena’s parents were quite upset about her seeing someone. Fearing they might lose each other, Aamir and Reena made the difficult decision to elope, knowing it would hurt their parents. Aamir clarified that their decision wasn’t out of disrespect or rebellion but stemmed from insecurity. He added that because he wasn’t yet 21 when they decided to get married, they had to wait a few months before they could legally wed.
