Director Namrata Rao says Amitabh Bachchan's inputs were crucial in the docuseries 'Angry Young Men': "He was the third Angry Young Man" | Hindi Movie News Filmymeet

Namrata Rao, a National Award-winning editor known for her work on Kahaani (2012), has transitioned to directing with the docuseries Angry Young Men. This three-part series explores the legacy of Salim-Javed, the influential screenwriters of the 1970s and ’80s, who created the iconic Angry Young Man character, famously portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan.
Amitabh Bachchan, an icon of Indian cinema, is often referred to as the ‘Angry Young Man’, a title that encapsulates his portrayal of rebellious characters in the 1970s and 1980s. This persona, defined by intense, rebellious characters in films like ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewar’, and ‘Sholay’, resonated with a generation grappling with social upheaval, catapulting him to stardom as a cultural icon.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Namrata Rao discussed the diverse voices featured in the docuseries Angry Young Men. When asked if it was a deliberate choice to minimize Amitabh Bachchan’s contributions to avoid overshadowing Salim-Javed’s legacy, she acknowledged his critical role. She stated, “Amitabh Bachchan was the third Angry Young Man. For the world, he is the Angry Young Man, right? His inputs were very, very important.”
Rao also reflected on her intention to focus on Salim-Javed as the creators of the Angry Young Man persona, expressing that while there were moments she wanted to highlight Bachchan’s insights, such as his experiences in Deewar and Sholay, she aimed to maintain the series’ focus on the screenwriters. She identified key moments where his perspective was essential, including his unique role in Don and the backstory of how he was approached for Zanjeer after a series of flops.
Abhishek Bachchan who made an appearance on the show is quoted as saying that “I just remember my father telling me that they gave the best narrations because they told me a story. It was like an orchestra. He said they were so in sync.”
