During a recent interview with The Lallantop, Emraan Hashmi revealed that Mahesh Bhatt had cautioned him about playing a particular character in ‘Once Upon a Time In Mumbaai.’ Bhatt expressed concerns that portraying the morally irredeemable character could potentially end Hashmi’s career and drastically alter how audiences perceive him.
Despite the initial warnings, Emraan Hashmi decided to take on the role. After the film’s release and its success, Mahesh Bhatt apologized to director Milan Luthria. Emraan noted that Bhatt acknowledged his initial misgivings were unfounded, recognizing that the film turned out to be more entertaining than he had anticipated.

The climax of the film was notably controversial for its departure from traditional Bollywood endings. In ‘Once Upon a Time In Mumbaai,’ Ajay Devgn‘s character, Sultan Mirza, is killed, and Shoaib Khan assumes control of the city. Emraan Hashmi reflected that this unconventional twist, where the hero dies and his character becomes an anti-hero, was a significant gamble. He mentioned that Mahesh Bhatt was also unsure about how audiences would respond to this ending. However, Emraan emphasized that taking such risks often leads to success in the industry, suggesting that sticking to formulas rarely achieves the same impact.
