‘The Legend of Maula Jatt‘, starring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, is scheduled for release in India on October 2. This news has created considerable buzz on social media. The film, which premiered in Pakistan in October 2022, has been credited with revolutionising South Asian cinema.
The official Instagram handle of ‘Maula Jatt’ announced, “Two years on, The Legend of Maula Jatt is still unstoppable! Witness the epic saga on the big screen in India from 2nd October 2024.” The makers have reportedly secured the rights, making this the first Pakistani film to be released in India in years.Initially slated for a December 30, 2023 release, the Indian premiere was postponed after distributors withdrew just before its debut.
Earlier, an INOX official had told PTI, “We have been informed by the distributors that the release of the film has been postponed (indefinitely). We were told this two or three days ago. Zee Studios had acquired the rights to The Legend of Maula Jatt as they were expecting the film to do well. But because of the resistance from certain sections, the decision was made to not release the movie.”
‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ was a major success both in Pakistan and internationally, holding the record as the highest-grossing Pakistani and Punjabi-language film ever. Based on Nasir Adeeb’s characters, it is a modern retelling of the 1979 classic. Starring Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, and Humaima Malick, the film delves into the intense rivalry between Maula Jatt and Noori Natt.
Fawad Khan is known for his roles in Hindi films like ‘Khoobsurat’ and ‘Kapoor & Sons’. He paused his career in Indian cinema following the 2016 Uri attacks and the resulting border closures. Reports suggest he will make a cameo in Kartik Aaryan’s upcoming film, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’, directed by Anees Bazmee.
