Gippy Grewal demands Sikh representation on CBFC amid Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency' controversy Filmymeet

Gippy Grewal, the Punjabi cinema star, has called for a Sikh representative to be added to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), highlighting delays in clearing Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’. He emphasised that such a member would ensure accurate representation of Sikh community and its religious nuances in films.
Grewal highlighted the need for a Sikh representative on the Central Board of Film Certification in his interview with IndiaToday.in.He stressed that such a role is crucial for ensuring accurate depiction of the Sikh community and its religious aspects in films. This call follows the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s push for Sikh representation on the board. While promoting his film ‘Ardaas Sarbat De Bhale Di’, which features Jasmin Bhasin and Gurpreet Ghuggi and is set in the spiritually significant Hazur Sahib, Gippy discussed the importance of this issue.
The singer noted that while the CBFC can address general film issues, understanding religious nuances requires specialised knowledge. He shared his own process for ‘Ardaas’, revealing that he first had the film reviewed by the Hazur Sahib management committee, which issued a No Objection Certificate before it was submitted to the CBFC.
Gippy emphasised the need for a Sikh representative on the board, citing his own practice of showing ‘Ardaas’ to the Hazur Sahib Prabhandhak Committee for a No Objection Certificate before submitting it to the CBFC. He stressed that while the board handles broader issues, a religious expert is crucial for nuanced reviews. He added that having a Sikh representative on the board is crucial for films that discuss Sikhism, represent the Sikh community, or depict the state of Punjab in any manner.
For those unaware, Kangana Ranaut’s directorial film ‘Emergency’ has faced delays, reportedly due to mounting controversies. The actress, who is also a Mandi Lok Sabha MP, claimed the film’s approval was halted after CBFC members received “threats.” A new release date has yet to be announced. The controversy began with the trailer’s release, which depicted Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a Khalistan leader, supporting Indira Gandhi’s party for a separate Sikh state. This portrayal led the Shiromani Akali Dal in Delhi to issue a legal notice to the CBFC, demanding the film be halted.
