Before Nagarjuna met Amala, his personal life had its share of challenges. In February 1984, he married Lakshmi Daggubati, a union that connected two of South India’s most prominent film families. They welcomed their son, Naga Chaitanya, in November 1986. Despite their efforts to make the marriage work, the relationship faced difficulties, leading to their separation in 1990. This challenging time saw Nagarjuna channeling his energy into his career, diving deep into his film projects to cope with the emotional toll.
The beginning of a new romance
It was during this time of professional dedication that Nagarjuna met Amala Mukherjee on the sets of various films. Amala, known for her grace and dedication to her craft, quickly caught Nagarjuna’s attention. The duo starred together in multiple films, and their professional relationship soon blossomed into a deep friendship. Nagarjuna was reportedly smitten by Amala’s punctuality and commitment, qualities that set her apart in an industry where such traits were often hard to find.
While Nagarjuna’s feelings for Amala grew over time, it was a simple yet profound gesture that truly won her heart. During the filming of one of their movies, Amala found herself uncomfortable with a particular costume, so much so that she broke down in tears in her vanity van. Hearing of her distress, Nagarjuna personally visited her to understand the situation. Upon learning of her discomfort, he assured her that he would speak to the director and have the costume changed. This act of kindness and understanding deeply touched Amala, marking the beginning of their romantic relationship.
A proposal straight out of a movie and a happily ever after
In 1991, during a trip to the United States, Nagarjuna surprised Amala with a marriage proposal. The moment was unexpected, much like a scene from a romantic film. Amala later recounted the event, fondly recalling how the proposal took her by surprise. With excitement and a bit of trepidation, she accepted, and the couple began planning their future together.
Then in 1992 Nagarjuna and Amala tied the knot in a low-key ceremony in Chennai, attended only by close family and friends. Despite both being at the peak of their careers, the couple chose to keep their wedding intimate, valuing their personal connection over public spectacle. Two years later, they welcomed their son, Akhil Akkineni, completing their family.
Today, Nagarjuna and Amala’s love story stands as a testament to the power of mutual respect, understanding, and love.
