Veteran actor Smriti Biswas who is known for many Hindi, Marathi and Bengali movies passed away on Thursday. She was 100 years old and known for movies like ‘Baap Re Baa[, ‘Bhagam Bhaag’, ‘Dwanda’ ‘Neel Akasher Neeche’ among others.
She passed away on Thursday and filmmaker Hansal Mehta has now paid a tribute to her. He shared some photos of her, from her last days and wrote, “Go away in peace and to a happier place, dear Smritiji.Thank you for blessing our lives. RIP Smriti Biswas.”
Biswas started acting when she was 10 years old, in a Bengali film ‘Sandhya’. She worked with some of the best directors in the business – right from Guru Dutt to V Shantaram, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, BR Chopra and Raj Kapoor. She got married to film director SD Narag and left acting after that.
‘ Model Girl’ which came in 1960 was her last Hindi film. The Film Heritage Foundation shared the news of her passing away on Instagram. The caption read, “FHF was deeply saddened to hear of the passing away of yesteryear actress Smriti Biswas yesterday. Smriti Biswas, who celebrated her centenary in February this year, was one of the most vivacious and attractive actors in the 1940s and 50s, often playing spirited vamps, parallel or second lead heroines in films”
The foundation has also revealed that she donated her personal material to the foundation. “She had donated her personal material to Film Heritage Foundation including photographs, booklets, scrapbooks of clippings and personal effects of her husband the filmmaker S.D. Narang that she had meticulously collected over the years that was a record of her career beginning from her Lahore days. We are proud to preserve this archive in her name,” said the foundation.
