After the fourth episode of House of the Dragon season 2 aired, Max released a trailer for the fifth episode, teasing the aftermath of the Battle at Rook’s Rest. Season 2 has seen the Blacks and the Greens nearing full-on war, with bloodshed on both sides. It started with Daemon hiring Blood and Cheese, a pair of assassins, to murder Aegeon’s six year old son, Jaehaerys.In revenge, King and Ser Criston sent Ser Arryk, disguised as his twin Ser Erryk, to kill Rhaenrya, although it failed. Rhaenrya attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution, but after Alicent declined, Rhaenrya began to act more violently, sending the dragons to battle.
On 8th of July, 2024, Max released a teaser trailer showing snippets from season 2 episode 5 of House of the Dragon. The head of Meleys, Rhaenys’ dragon, is paraded throughout King’s Landing as the Greens celebrate. The last episode began with Criston Cole capturing multiple castles for the Greens. Aegon grows restless and insecure, feeling that Criston has gone rogue and that his orders have no effect. To feel empowered, Aegon flies off to Rook’s Rest to join the battle to capture the castle.
Meanwhile, Rhaenrya arrives at Dragonstone. She says that they need to send one of the dragons to war, and Rhaenys volunteers herself and Meleys. Once she reaches Rook’s Rest, Criston and Aemond’s plan is revealed: They intend to draw out one of the Blacks’ dragons through the attack and kill it. However, when Aegon arrives on his own dragon, things go sideways. Aemond fires on Aegon, his own brother, and his dragon, causing them to fall to the forest floor.
The climax of the episode comes when Aemond and Criston’s dragon, Vhagar, kills Meleys by biting off her head, causing Rhaenys to fall to her death.
The trailer for episode 5 shows snippets of the fallout. Aegon seems to have survived the fall, although not without injury. Despite losing Rhaenys and her dragon, Rhaenrya marches on in her conquest, with Daemon threatening to burn down citizens’ houses if the Greens do not surrender. The trailer ends with Mysaria saying “there is more than one way to fight a war,” partially alluding to how she helped plot the death of Jaehaerys. This implies the Blacks may be planning something similar in response to Rhaenys’ death.
