‘Joker: Folie a Deux’, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, concluded its first week at the Indian box office on a disappointing note, collecting an estimated Rs 12.05 crore over its 7-day run, according to early reports.
The film had a promising start, earning Rs 5.15 crore on its opening day, largely benefiting from its early release on October 2, coinciding with the Gandhi Jayanti national holiday. However, the initial momentum slowed down, with the film managing to earn around Rs 10.8 crore during the extended weekend, as reported by sacnilk.com.
After the weekend, the box office numbers took a significant dip. On Monday, the film earned an estimated Rs 66 lakh, followed by Rs 59 lakh on Tuesday. These figures brought the total first-week collection to Rs 12.05 crore.
In comparison, the sequel’s performance pales in contrast to the 2019 ‘Joker’ release, which saw phenomenal success at the Indian box office. The original ‘Joker’, had a similar opening day of Rs 5.15 crore but went on to earn Rs 23 crore over its first weekend and closed the first week with Rs 37.90 crore. The film ultimately amassed Rs 67.95 crore in its lifetime collection in India.
Joker 2’s underperformance has been attributed to mixed-to-negative reviews flooding social media, which may have dampened the audience turnout both in India and globally. As the film continues its run, it remains to be seen whether it can recover its footing at the box office in the coming weeks.
