‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ will soon be making its way onto streaming platforms, less than a month into its theatrical release.
Amid reports of its poor performance at the box office, Variety has confirmed that ‘Joker 2’ will be available on digital platforms starting October 29. The film is reportedly being rushed onto digital platforms as an attempt by Warner Bros.to mitigate financial losses after the film’s underwhelming performance in cinemas. Comparatively, the first ‘Joker’ movie, which was also released on October 4, had a much longer theatrical window, only becoming available for digital purchase on December 17, 2019.
The makers are reportedly hoping that digital sales might help recoup some of the film’s losses estimated at $150 million to $200 million, a stark contrast to the original ilm, which earned over $1 billion worldwide. The sequel struggled to earn critical and commercial acclaim, garnering largely negative reviews and low scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite its lacklustre performance, ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ could still find success on digital platforms and might resonate more than it did in theatres. However, this will not fully compensate for the disappointing box office results.
Directed by Todd Phillips, ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ also starred Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn. So far, the film earned $51.5 million at the US domestic box office and added another $165 million globally after two weeks of release. Ticket sales have projected that the film will likely end its box office run with a lifetime gross of $65 million domestically and $210 million to $215 million globally.
