Kamal Haasan and Rajesh Khanna, two iconic figures of Indian cinema, have worked together on a few occasions. Recently, the ‘Vikram’ actor narrated the story of how he nearly put Khanna in danger and got a scolding from Dimple Kapadia because of it.
During his conversation with Rediff, Kamal Haasan shared that, unlike others, he chose not to address Rajesh Khanna as ‘Kaka.’ Instead, he preferred to call him ‘Bade Bhaiyya‘ or ‘Mr.Khanna.’ He recalled the many hours they spent together, including a memorable visit when Rajesh Khanna came to Chennai, during which Kamal arranged for movie outing together with the actor.
Kamal Haasan recounted an experience while watching a film with Rajesh Khanna, where he realized that Khanna probably hadn’t been to a public theatre in years. Concerned that things could get chaotic if the audience recognized Khanna when the lights came on, Kamal grew anxious.
Despite enjoying the film, Khanna refused to leave until the end credits, which made Kamal panic. He knew that if the audience discovered Rajesh Khanna’s presence, there could be a stampede, with potentially dire consequences. However, Khanna insisted on staying until the end, and as expected, once the show was over, the audience realized who was there, and chaos ensued.
Kamal found himself acting as Khanna’s bodyguard, escorting him through the crowd as things got out of control. Although Khanna’s shirt was torn in the frenzy, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Kamal also recalled that while Rajesh Khanna didn’t seem to mind the attention he received at the theatre, his wife, Dimple Kapadia, was quite upset. She questioned Kamal’s judgment in taking Khanna to a public screening, expressing concern that anything could have happened.
The senior actor added that he and Dimple Kapadia remained friends even after her split from Rajesh Khanna in the 1980s. By that time, Kamal’s own relationship with Khanna had deteriorated. He explained that he never aspired to be a star and had observed Khanna closely. Unfortunately, their friendship ended on a sour note at a party at Khanna’s house, where Khanna was less than polite. However, Kamal emphasized that his friendship with Dimple was everlasting.
