In a candid conversation with us about her upcoming movie ‘Emergency’, Kangana Ranaut delved into the challenges and motivations behind taking on multiple roles in the film. The talented actress, who has also donned the hats of director and producer for this project, shared her unique perspective on managing these demanding responsibilities.

Kangana began by explaining that she doesn’t see herself as three separate entities—an actor, director, and producer—but rather as a cohesive whole.”I never became a producer to earn money,” she clarified. “In my 20 years of career, I’ve seen that producers often put undue pressure on directors. Sometimes there’s animosity, sometimes they become friends with them, and both situations can be harmful. Either you completely lose your mind, or you’re caught in a dilemma,” she said.
She continued by revealing the true reason behind her decision to become a producer: “I became a producer so that I can give myself wings to fly when I direct. It wasn’t about the money at all.”
Despite her role as a producer, Kangana humorously admitted that she doesn’t have a strong grasp of financial matters. “Don’t learn anything from me in production. I appointed my brother to handle those aspects. I don’t even know how many zeros there are in a crore! I’m really stupid when it comes to digits,” she confessed with a laugh. “As a producer, I don’t exist. If I go to negotiate and someone says you have to give this much amount to me, I would probably agree. My team often has to step in and remind me to be cautious.”

Kangana emphasized that her primary identity remains that of a filmmaker. “Even if my artists take my jewelry, I don’t care. I’m essentially a filmmaker, and I’ve always operated from that space. Whether it’s production or acting, I’ve done both, but I have been put off by acting a long time ago. Being an actor feels too passive for me—I can’t imagine myself in such a role.”
Filmmaking has never felt like work to Kangana. She says, “For me, it is a beautiful dance between every element that surrounds me—light, fabrics, colors, combinations, people, expressions, stories, fantasy, life, paradox, catharsis, subtext.” She sees filmmaking as encompassing “poetry, beauty, humanity, destiny, and even God.” She described it as an addiction.

Last but not least, reflecting on her journey, Kangana concluded, “I was always a filmmaker. I don’t know how much justice I did to each role.”
