Kangana Ranaut issues apology and withdraws farm law remarks after BJP backlash

Today, Kangana Ranaut said that she regrets her recent comments about the three farm laws involved in the farmers’ protest in 2020. Speaking in her Lok Sabha constituency of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, she mentioned that the laws overruled by Prime Minister Modi’s government in November 2021 “should be brought back… and farmers themselves should demand it.”
The actress said, “I know this will be controversial…but I feel the farm laws that were repealed should be brought back. The farmers themselves should demand it. They are a pillar of strength for the nation’s development and I want to appeal to them – demand the laws back for your own good,”.

The BJP stated that Ranaut’s comments do not reflect the party’s views and clarified that her remarks are a “personal statement.”
“Kangana Ranaut is not authorised to make such a statement on behalf of the BJP and it doesn’t depict the BJP’s view on the farm bills,” Party’s spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said.
In response to Mr. Bhatia’s statement, she said, “My views on the farm laws are personal and do not represent the party’s stance on those bills.”
She also released a video statement acknowledging that many people are “disappointed” with her comments. “I have to keep in mind that I am not just an artist but also a BJP worker. My opinions should not be personal and should be the party’s stand. I regret and take my words back if my comments have disappointed someone,” she said.
Ranaut was scolded by the BJP last month for her comments about the farmers’ protests. She said a “Bangladesh-like situation” could have happened in India if the government hadn’t acted strongly. In 2020, during the protests, she also wrongly referred to a woman farmer from Punjab as Bilkis Bano.
