Karan Johar reveals he saw a lot of 'nonsense' during Covid, became the 'poster boy' of Bollywood bashing | Hindi Movie News Filmymeet

Karan Johar, in a recent interview, opened up on the time when Bollywood was being bashed left, right and centre during the Covid period and he too, was not spared from the trauma. While talking to Faye D’Souza, the filmmaker said, “I’d seen a lot of nonsense that happened during the Covid time and a lot of the trolling. People had an impression of me through those seven years about things that were coming out.It was a tough time during the Covid when things were happening and Bollywood was being bashed and somehow I had become the poster boy of all that. Then you also begin to wonder if people really dislike you and not know the person you really are and if they do, will they not show up to watch your movie.”

He also revealed that the trolls did not even spare his family. He added, “I never let trolls get to me but this time it had gone too far. You walk in (to your house) and see a news anchor screaming about you and your mother watching it and breaking down every second day. You would expect people to show empathy and compassion and understand the circumstance we’re in. There was one news anchor who was saying like ‘something is wrong, what are you doing Karan?’ I was like ‘but, what has it got to do with me?’ They further would be like, ‘this has gone wrong, that has gone wrong, what do you have to say Karan?’ There are 18,000 other people in the industry, can you ask them? Why is it me who has to do something,” he said.”

In the same interaction, the filmmaker opened up about feeling uncomfortable in his skin and wearing oversized clothes all the time. Karan said, “I have body dysmorphia, I am very awkward getting into a pool. I don’t know how to do it without feeling pathetic. I’ve tried very hard to overcome it. No matter what the success you achieve, no matter who you think you are in your own head, I’m always in oversized clothes. Even if I lose the weight, and I try very hard, I’m always battling with it, but I’m always feeling I’m fat. So I don’t want you to see any part of my body.”
He continued by saying that he waits until the very last minute to change into his robe, even when he is in the pool with his best pals. He further added, “Nothing has changed since I was eight. I self-body shame myself all the time. The day you feel you’re looking good…doesn’t matter what you’ve achieved. Even in situations of intimacy, I need to put the lights out. I’ve been to therapy for it. All these issues…all fester and create mental health issues. I even took medication after suffering from a panic attack.”

On the work, Karan Johar’s recently produced film ‘Kill’ released in theatres on July 05, 2024. He has also produced Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk starrer film ‘Bad Newz’, which will be released on July 19.
