From the flamboyant Poo to the intense Rupa, Kareena Kapoor Khan is among those few actors in Indian cinema who have dared to do it all when it comes to taking on roles of challenging characters. As the actress celebrates 25 years in cinema, her role in the 2004 film ‘Chameli’ is one of the most talked about in her career.
Kareena, played the role of a prostitute named Chameli in the film directed by Sudhir Mishra.Opening up about bravely taking up the film early in her career, the actress revealed that her eagerness to join the project may have been motivated owing to her grandfather Raj Kapoor, who also made a film on a similar plot titled ‘Jaagti Raho’. She said in a segment of ‘It Changed My Life’ on Amazon Music, “Chameli actually was one of the first films that I actually braved to do very early on in my career. It was something that I took to instantly because when I was narrated the subject, it was a story of one night and my grandfather Raj Kapoor had also done a story of a film which was about one night, which was ‘Jaagti Raho’. It’s actually one of my most favourite films of his. So when I was offered the story of one night, a story of, the sex worker and how she meets a potential client. I think it was just a sense of freedom and believing in yourself because, you know, she had nothing actually.”
She also reminisced about the songs becoming chartbusters saying, “Sajnavi Sajna was such a big hit, so was Bhaage Re Manvin. I never thought they would be such big hits, but I think till today if you hear them, it’s just got that feeling of nostalgia. It was such a brave film to do. I think in that way it changed my life because a lot of my fans, a lot of directors got the opportunity to actually know that I was, passionate about acting.”
