Durgesh Kumar, who is known for his performance in Panchayat series, recently shared his heartfelt reaction to ‘Laapataa Ladies‘ selection for the prestigious Oscars. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film has garnered significant attention since its release on March 1, 2024, and is being recognized for its representation of modern Indian cinema.
When asked how he feels about ‘Laapataa Ladies’ being nominated for an Oscar, Kumar said, “This year has been incredible for me with Panchayat and Laapataa Ladies. My first film was released on February 21, 2014, and my latest film, ‘Laapataa Ladies,’ was released on March 1, 2024. The amount of recognition this film has received is overwhelming, and for that, I want to sincerely thank Ram Rawat Ji, Roman Modi Ji, and Kiran Rao Ma’am from the bottom of my heart.”
Reflecting on the film’s impact, he shared, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has resonated with people everywhere because it represents Indian cinema at its core—modern India, where audiences truly want to watch films like this. It’s about a young girl who understands the value of education and its importance in life. The film presents this unique thought in a very light-hearted and relatable manner, making it even more impactful.”
Discussing the challenges faced during production, he noted, “If I had to point out the toughest part, I would say the rehearsals were the most challenging. Even for small scenes, we had numerous rehearsals because Kiran Rao Ma’am is a perfectionist and wanted everything to be just right. It was tough, but in the end, everything came together. And now, as you know, the film is being recognized for the Oscars.”
As for how he plans to celebrate this moment, Kumar stated, “I have many friends with me, so I will definitely try to spend the whole night with them. I plan to go on Netflix, watch the film again, relive the moment, and celebrate it together.”
