Kiran Rao’s directorial ‘Laapataa Ladies‘ has continued to grab attention and a lot of love ever since it released. The film did very well at the box office despite having zero expectations. Moreover, the love has continued to pour more ever since its OTT release. But it didn’t stop there. The film is now India’s official entry to the Oscars in the ‘Best International Feature Film category’.
In a recent chat, Kiran has opened up on what she felt has really worked in the film’s favour. She said, “The story spoke to me. It’s about two girls searching for freedom, opportunity, and a voice,” further adding that Hindi cinema needs to make more movies about women and by women. “I feel that we need more films on women. It’s exceedingly important that we invest much more in women storytellers, producers, actors, and projects helmed by women. I’ll continue to want to tell stories revolving around interesting female characters,” said Kiran.
She also said that people related to the movie as it was filled with humour. “We wanted to integrate these issues into the story through humour because no one wants a lecture when they go to the cinema. I genuinely believe humor is one of the best ways to tackle some of the most uncomfortable issues. We felt that keeping the story rooted and organic would make it far more believable and enjoyable. That’s one of the key reasons the audience responded so well to it,” opined Kiran.
Recently, the Aamir Khan who has produced the film, reacted to its entry to the Oscars and said, “We are all so happy with the news. I am so proud of Kiran and her entire team. I would like to thank the selection committee of the Film Federation of India, which chose our film to represent India at the Oscars.”
