'Maharaj' to challenge Gujarat High Court's stay order on release - Exclusive | Hindi Movie News Filmymeet

Just before its release ‘Maharaj‘ landed in a soup for its controversial story line. Multiple industry sources have confirmed that Yash Raj Films and Netflix will challenge the order halting the release of ‘Maharaj’. The Gujarat High Court issued the stay on Thursday, just a day before ‘Maharaj’ was scheduled to stream on OTT.
A veteran trade source says, “YRF and Netflix are challenging the stay order. The matter is in court. Maharaj is based on a real-life case. The movie has been adapted from Saurabh Shah’s book titled Maharaj. The author has also come out to say that the film does not vilify the Vaishnav community or the religion. It is about a social reformer, who brought about a positive change in society. The makers are hopeful for a positive outcome on this.”
Previously, while passing the stay order, the court order said ,”Today on Urgency few devotees and follower of Pushtimargi Vaishav panth approached Gujarat High Court Vide SCA/8772/24 after hearing of at length Gujarat High Court issued notice to the broadcasting authority, Central board of Film Certification and Producer of the film ‘Maharaj’ Yash Raj Film ,OTT Netflix and make it returnable on 18/6, till returnable date high court granted stay on broadcasting release on OTT and media of Movie MAHARAJ.”
The youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, represented by the Bajrang Dal, had also expressed concerns regarding the movie, fearing it may portray a religious leader in a negative manner and potentially hurt sentiments. Gautam Ravriya, coordinator for the Konkan region of VHP-Bajrang Dal, informed ETimes that they have urged the film’s makers to allow them to preview the film before its release to ensure there is nothing objectionable in it. However, they have yet to receive a response to their request.
The movie ‘Maharaj’ is set in 1862 and is based on the Maharaj Libel Case, a significant trial held in a Bombay court. The case involved journalists Karshandas Mulji and Nanabhai Rustomji Ranina, who faced defamation charges for making public accusations against religious leaders of the Pushtimarg sect.
Maharaj is directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and marks the acting debut of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan. The movie also features Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey with Sharvari in a guest appearance.
