Nag Ashwin’s mythological sci-fi film Kalki 2898 AD has been breaking records not only in India, but also in North America ( USA and Canada) .The United States of America over the past few years, has become a huge market, especially for Telugu films, with it becoming the 11th most spoken language in the country. It is the highest grossing foreign film in the circuit this year, beating the likes of Demon Slayer and Godzilla Minus One.
Kalki 2898 AD is also now the second highest grossing Indian film in North America, second only to SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2- The Conclusion, which minted US $ 20.7 million back in 2017.However, Kalki is trying to close the gap with every passing day. On its 29th day of the release, the film earned US $ 11,115 which took the total collection of the film in the circuit to US $ 18.40 million ( Rs 154 crore). To reach the second spot, Kalki 2898 AD had to beat the likes of Shah Rukh Khan with Jawan and Pathaan and Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s RRR.
Kalki still has a huge window in front, till the release of two more Telugu films: Double Ismart starring Ram Pothineni and Ravi Teja’s Mr Bachchan, releasing during the Independence Day weekend in India. But none of them is expected to get as wider a showcasing as Kalki, but the release of Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Stree 2 on the same day can make things difficult. Not many are aware that Stree 2 is being distributed by the same company which distributed Kalki in June.
