Nana Patekar who made his debut in 1978 has come a long way in the industry in his journey of 46 years. The veteran actor has worked with the best in the business – be it Amitabh Bachchan, Smita Patil, Rishi Kapoor and many more. He’s also got some fond memories with all of them. Not many know that Nana shared a deep bond with the late Smita Patil. They worked together in movies like ‘Sutradhaar’ and ‘Aaj Ki Aawaaz’.
In an interview, the actor has recalled memories with some of his favourite co-stars.In a chat with Lallantop, he was asked about the moment he was with Smita when the news of her mother’s demise came to her. They were for an event together at Brabourne Stadium, revealed Nana. He got a little emotional and said, “Hum gaadi chalaate hai uski wajah se. She used to teach me to drive and would sit next to me. I was scared and told her, accident kar dunga, thok dunga gaadi. She would tell me, ‘kuch nahi hoga, main marungi tere saat’. She would tell me ‘saadiyaan leni hai tere ghar ke liye’. Alag hi thi, bohot jaldi gayi. Aise insaan bohot kam hote hai. Aaj hoti na industry mein, toh bhi wahin hoti woh top pe. (I have learnt how to drive because of her. She would force me to learn driving even when I was scared. She would sit next to me and tell me, ‘nothing will happen. I will die with you if something happens’. She would also tell me she wants to buy sarees for my family. We don’t find humans like her, she was just something else. She passed away too soon. I assure that if she would have been there today, she would still be on the top as an actress).”
The actor was further asked about actresses who he really liked and he said, “Uss waqt, Hema ji thi waise hum ko Waheeda ji bohot acchi lagti thi – kya kaam karti thi. Kamaal har jagah. Actually, purani filmein hai aur uske gaane, main usmein atakta hu. I listen to Suraiya ji’s songs even when I go to the gym. Badaa talleen hoke main yeh sab gaane sunta hoon. Mujhe bohot accha lagta hai. I hear songs of Ghulam Ali and raag Yaman Kalyan while working out at the gym.”
He further laughed and said that he’s fine mentally as he avoids listening to the current songs and everything that’s happening in recent times. He largely continues to remain in old times!
