Neha Bhasin opens up about battling depression and finding strength in family: 'I didn’t want to be sexualized or objectified'

Singer Neha Bhasin recently opened up about her struggles with depression and mental health during the launch of her new song Naam Toh Tu Jaanta Hai. The event, which also doubled as a celebration for her 42nd birthday, became an emotional moment for the artist as she reflected on her journey of self-acceptance and resilience.
Speaking at the event, Neha candidly shared how her early experiences with societal expectations and body image affected her. “I used to feel very confused. I used to feel good when I paid attention to the media. Everyone works hard to get recognized, but when I saw the reactions, I’d think, ‘Why didn’t this happen to me when I was working?’ It took me a while to see everything positively,” she said.
Neha also spoke about the pressure of societal standards and its impact on her self-esteem. “I am not a skinny girl. I have curves. When I was younger, I used to lose a lot of weight just so that I didn’t look full-bodied. I didn’t want to be sexualized or objectified. Now, everyone is being sexualized. It’s okay. But I still have my days. When I’m not looking good or feeling fat, I feel sad. Trolling affects everybody. But trolls haven’t made it, we have, and that’s why we keep going.”

Opening up about her mental health, Neha revealed that she suffers from PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), a severe depressive disorder. “I’ve had it my whole life, but this year, even after doing everything, I wasn’t getting better. I went into very severe depression and genuinely thought I would never come out of it. It was a very tough time,” she said.

Neha credited her family, particularly her mother and husband, for helping her through her darkest moments. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have been able to take it. I was literally crying everywhere – even in Turkey, I felt like I wasn’t in a good place. My family, some friends, and mostly my mother and husband were my pillars. When I came to Bombay, I was alone for 10-12 years. Today, success comes and goes, but the love from my family and the world has stayed. That is very important.”
