Director Om Raut, who suffered criticism from a devout public following the release of his film ‘Adipurush’, recently defended the work. He said that the film was a victim of false perception and that, in reality, its box office receipts were pretty respectable. Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, and Saif Ali Khan played Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman, and Raavan in the Ramayana-based film ‘Adipurush’.
During a conversation with Amol Parchure’s YouTube channel, the director discussed the positive reviews the movie received and enumerated all of its box office successes. He shared, “Our first day was Rs 70 crore, and that’s just in India. Our total box office was over Rs 400 crore. So, the numbers were very large… With Adipurush, there was a loss of perception, not loss of revenue. If the perception was positive, if the perception was under control, we would’ve seen an exorbitant number, which we did not see. That was disappointing.”
He said that he had received responses from people all around the nation complimenting the movie, in spite of what had been published about it. “Because of a few small aspects, the perception of the entire film became negative. This is because interest in regressive media is much higher, but that’s the nature of the business,” he said, claiming to have noticed ‘some planning to pan the film’ by interested parties, like those who posted clips from screenings on social media. “But it’s fine, it’s done and dusted,” he stated.
When asked about the constant criticism Adipurush faced, the director responded that at the end of the day, these matters are inconsequential. The only thing of importance is one’s performance at the box office. In the Telangana region alone, a total of Rs 200 crore was achieved. This is a substantial figure. In the United States, earnings exceeded $10 million. He also emphasized that the manner in which criticism is delivered is the issue, as he has no problem with criticism itself. “Defending it isn’t the solution, you have to accept it,” he said.
Om Raut also added that stars like Prabhas and Salman Khan are ‘flop-proof’. He shared, “They have huge fan followings. Ups and downs cannot affect them, because the audiences’ love for them is beyond comprehension.”
The first wave of criticism for ‘Adipurush’ came right after the trailer was released, with audiences universally denouncing it for having poor visual effects. It was revealed a few days later that the film will not be released in January as scheduled. When it was finally released in June, it received harsh criticism for its dialogue and a number of artistic decisions in addition to fresh complaints about the visual effects. What followed was a dispute that had a big effect on the movie’s performance.
