Producer and former CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani has clarified recent claims made by actor Govinda regarding James Cameron’s blockbuster film, ‘Avatar.’ According to Nihalani, Govinda was mistaken in his assertion about being offered a role in the Hollywood film. Instead, Nihalani explained that ‘Avatar‘ was a Hindi film project they were developing together, which unfortunately remained incomplete.
In an interview with Friday Talkies, Nihalani recounted their collaboration on a film titled Avatar, where they had shot about 40 minutes of footage. He considered this project one of his best works but mentioned that it was shelved due to various issues. Nihalani noted Govinda’s fixation on the title ‘Avatar’ and how this led to confusion, with Govinda later claiming involvement with the Hollywood Avatar.
According to Nihalani, Govinda’s statements about suggesting the title ‘Avatar’ to James Cameron and turning down the film due to concerns about body paint were based on a misunderstanding. He humorously mentioned incidents during filming, including Govinda feeling faint unexpectedly, which contributed to the project’s challenges.
Nihalani expressed disappointment over the confusion, stating that Govinda had begun believing he was offered the Hollywood Avatar role, whereas it was actually their Hindi film project. Despite the setbacks, Nihalani fondly recalled their past collaborations and Govinda’s contributions to films like “Shola Aur Shabnam” and “Aankhen.”
Govinda’s career, marked by his dynamic performances, includes his last appearance in Nihalani’s 2019 production, ‘Rangeela Raja’.
