The much-anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ opened in theatres in India on Friday and has been doing decent business at the box office.
Besides the gripping storyline, great performances and spectacular visuals, the film has netizens buzzing over a surprising Indian connection. Taking to Twitter, fans who caught the screenings of the film over the weekend, were surprised to see a character named Ravi playing a rather prominent role in the movie lead by Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington.
The character, played by Swedish actor Alexander Karim, has caught fans off guard, with his inclusion in the ancient Roman epic. In the film, the character introduces himself to Mescal’s Lucius as ‘Ravi from Varanasi’. Interestingly, the character is featured as a former gladiator who puts down his sword to become a doctor and help fellow gladiators with their battle scars and wounds.”One of the best things about GLADIATOR II is an Indian guy “Ravi, from Varanasi”, an integral character to the story. Just found out the actor’s name: Alexander Karim,” read a tweet.
While historical accuracy in such characters often sparks debate, many fans are praising the inclusion of diversity in the narrative. “Watching gladiator ii and it has indian representation!” another fan said, hailing the director’s decision to add an Indian character to the film.
Another shocked fan said, “There’s a man from Uttar Pradesh is Gladiator 2….a pacifist doctor named Ravi”
Meawhile, there were others who could not seem to get over the chemistry between the leading men who play friends. “The chemistry between Lucius and Ravi!” exclaimed a fan.
Another quipped, “All I took from Gladiator II is that Paul’s character and Ravi (played by Alexander Karim) should’ve kissed, some good tension there.”
Karim is a known Swedish actor who had featured in a number of film and television projects. In recent years he began building up his career in the American movie industry, earning roles in series like ‘The Wheel of Time’ and ‘The Swarm’.
Considering the role Ravi plays in Lucius’s road to vengeance and redemption, it remains to be seen if he will return for a possible third part of the franchise.
‘Gladiator II’ is expected to score a $90 million weekend at the international box office. The film will release in the US on November 22, where it will clash with the musical ‘Wicked’.
