Prem Chopra, renowned for his villainous roles in Hindi cinema, is especially remembered for his iconic dialogue, ‘Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra,’ in Raj Kapoor’s Bobby.
In a recent conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Prem recalled an incident where he was travelling by train, and the train had to stop at every station due to the massive crowds that had gathered to see him.
The veteran star recalled that people discovered he was on the train, and even though it was a fast train, it had to stop at every station due to the large crowds that had gathered. They requested him to recite his iconic dialogue at each stop, explaining that the crowd wouldn’t let the train move otherwise. This continued throughout the journey.
Chopra noted that everyone wanted to hear him deliver his famous line in his distinctive style and were delighted when he performed it at each station.
Prem recounted the time he was offered the role in ‘Bobby’, mentioning that director Raj Kapoor didn’t reveal any details until he arrived on set. Chopra recalled asking Kapoor about his role multiple times, only to be told, “Batayenge (I’ll tell you).” He shared that if he asked Kapoor at night, Kapoor, who would often be drunk, would respond, “Arey yaar, batayenge. Tumhe bol diya batayenge.”
When Prem arrived for the shoot in Pune, he learned that he had only one dialogue in the film and had his reservations about it. He expressed his concerns, saying that he was working with prominent directors like Yash Chopra, BR Chopra, and Shakti Samantha, where he received roles as significant as the lead actor. He worried that taking this role might lead others to start offering him only guest appearances. However, veteran actor Prem Nath reassured him that this would work out in his favor, and indeed it did.
