Rajiv Thakur reveals Anubhav Sinha was initially not pleased with his casting in ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack' Filmymeet

Rajiv Thakur’s recent performance in IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack has garnered significant attention, marking a notable shift from his usual comedic roles. In the series, which dramatizes the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight, Thakur’s portrayal of a hijacker has been met with acclaim. He shared that his journey to this role was fraught with self-doubt, as he believed that casting directors primarily viewed him through the lens of his comedic background.
Thakur, who played the role of Chief, disclosed that director Anubhav Sinha was not initially pleased with his casting. In an interaction with India Today, he recounted how Sinha expressed his discontent to casting director Mukesh Chhabra, questioning why Thakur was chosen for a role that involved portraying a terrorist. This revelation highlights the challenges Thakur faced in transitioning from comedy to a more serious acting role
During his audition for the series, Thakur was uncertain about his chances of success. However, he seized the opportunity as a chance for growth. He vividly recalled the audition process, where he was asked to perform a scene in a villainous tone but was later encouraged to deliver it more naturally. Interestingly, Thakur regarded this audition as one of his weakest, which underscores the unpredictability of the acting process.
Thakur’s candid remarks about Sinha’s reaction to his casting reveal the director’s commitment to authenticity in storytelling. According to Thakur, Sinha expressed confusion over Chhabra’s decision to cast him, saying, “Why did you have to take Rajiv?” This concern stemmed from Sinha’s desire for the audience to take the portrayal seriously, fearing that Thakur’s comedic past might lead viewers to view the character lightly. However, Chhabra defended Thakur’s audition, arguing that if they didn’t give him a chance after his strong performance, it would be a disservice to his talent.
Reflecting on his experience during filming, Thakur noted the camaraderie among the cast, including Vijay Varma, who played the pilot. Their off-screen friendship added depth to their on-screen rivalry, creating a dynamic that resonated with the audiences.
