Ajay Devgn won a National Award for ‘The Legend Of Bhagat Singh‘ and the film continues to remain a cult till date. Infact, of all the films that were made on the freedom fighter, this one is the most remembered. But producer Ramesh Taurani recently revealed that they lost a lot of money as it did not well at the box office. The reason for that was that many films were made on Bhagat Singh at that point in time.
Taurani said during a chat with News18 Showsha, “It didn’t do well because back then five Bhagat Singh films were being made, out of which the Sonu Sood one released a week before us and our film clashed with Sunny and Bobby’s 23rd March 1931: Shaheed. There was one more film which was never finished, despite being filmed. It was made by the production controller of JP Dutta, but that one was never released. Then there was another one made by Ramanand Sagar, which was released on Doordarshan directly, a year later.”
The producer was asked if it was upsetting when the film didn’t do well. “Of course, it was. Puri company ki economy hil jaati hai. So the loss was of Rs 22 cr but we got critical acclaim of the highest order, went on to win all the honours, including the National Film Award, but it was a huge financial loss. We paid everyone back. The risk was ours, but the work was theirs. We knew multiple films were being made on this and yet we took a call because of our script.”
Taurani added that they paid away all the dues because the risk was taken by them, despite knowing that many films are being made on the same subject. Hence, it was only fair to pay off the dues to everyone who worked on the movie.
