Veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah has a reputation for voicing her mind and denouncing problems in the industry and in society. As a fervent supporter of feminism and ethical cinematography, Ratna has never held back when criticizing movies that she believes to be harmful. She recently voiced her thoughts on the general increase in violent action movies as well as the violent action spectacles like ‘RRR’ and ‘Animal’.
During a conversation with The Lallantop, Ratna shared that one recalls the impact that films like ‘Zanjeer’ or ‘Deewar’ had during the 1970s and 1980s, reflecting the anger stemming from social disruptions of that era. It was a challenging period for the nation. Once again, the younger generation is discontent and frustrated, and this sentiment is being depicted through art.
Ratna stated, “I have not seen RRR and Animal. I tried watching RRR but I didn’t watch the entire film. I can accept that many people have liked and appreciated RRR but it is not to my taste. However, I didn’t feel the need to watch Animal; I saw its poster and its mood and I got scared, felt distanced. Then I heard such things about it… so I didn’t watch it. I can imagine the sort of film it is,” the Dhak Dhak actor said.
“Even in more serious films — Vetrimaran films are disturbingly violent. I agree with the portrayal where you show violence to disturb you, to change things, but at the same time, violence is very seductive, people get used to it. I feel there is a responsibility producers of art have,” Ratna further added.
On the work front, Ratna Pathak Shah was last seen in the film ‘Dhak Dhak’ alongside Dia Mirza, Sanjana Sanghi and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
