Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt has commemorated Gandhi Jayanti by posting a nostalgic moment from his iconic film ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai‘ (2006) while celebrating the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi on his Instagram stories. The actor posted a memorable scene where his character, Munna Bhai, has a conversation with Bapu, the guiding force throughout the movie.
Along with the scene, Sanjay Dutt wrote a message: “Celebrating the spirit of Bapu’s wisdom, non-violence, and Gandhigiri on this Gandhi Jayanti!” He had highlighted the core themes that were most important in Gandhian philosophy—truth, non-violence, and empathy—and were central to the film and the teachings of Gandhi.It rang true for many fans as they recalled that relevance well, “Gandhigiri,” a term made popular by the film. Fans of the film went straight to social media to show their love for the character of Munna Bhai and his message, which finds relevance till today even years after the film is released.
Directed by the veteran Rajkumar Hirani, Lage Raho Munna Bhai was able to create a new cultural phenomenon by linking Gandhi’s ideology to today. Sanjay Dutt’s character is a good-intentioned gangster who poses as a follower of Gandhi to win over the love of a radio jockey and is then dramatically transformed by his experience and lives Gandhi’s principles to help others into enormously funny yet sweet situations.
