For seven years, actor-producer Sohum Shah worked hard to make his ambitious folk horror film Tumbbad. During this time, he struggled with doubts and insecurities but stayed focused thanks to a golden rule from superstar Aamir Khan, which is to focus on one project at a time and keep going no matter what.
Originally released in 2018, Tumbbad has found even greater success in its re-release, earning over Rs 25 crore at the box office. However, making the film wasn’t easy, and Sohum followed Aamir Khan’s approach, who is known for doing one film at a time and committing to it fully before moving on.
Sohum explained that he learned a lot from Aamir Khan even before entering the film industry. He shared that Aamir’s rule of doing one task at a time but doing it well helped him stay focused. Shah believes success is a result of following this simple principle.
“There’s a certain structure even when you multi-task, which I have learnt from Aamir Khan, even before I entered films. Whatever I have learnt, it has been from the Hindi film industry and within that, Aamir Khan has had a huge impact on me, that is, to do one task at a time but do it well, and success is a by-product. I believe in this thumb rule,” Sohum said during a recent media interaction.

He added that without this rule, which Aamir made clear for everyone, he might have gotten lost in his insecurities, especially as Tumbbad faced long production delays and re-shoots. Shah admitted that he could have easily become distracted by his worries about aging or missing other opportunities, but Aamir’s advice kept him on track.
“I could give seven years to Tumbbad because of that rule, which I kept in mind that Aamir had taught, to stick to it and believe it will take you somewhere. As an actor, even I would face many insecurities, that my age is passing, I should do some other films. But back of the mind, this rule did stay and helped me, otherwise I would have created a lot of mess,” he said.
The success of Tumbbad has made history, and the makers have now announced Tumbbad 2. While Sohum is unsure of when the film will release but he hopes that the team will start shooting in 2025.
