South Korean dystopian drama ‘Squid Game‘ emerged as a huge sensation upon its release in 2021. The massive success of the survival drama led to the makers announcing a second season, which is all set to release later this year.
Amid this, the makers have been hit with a legal suit by Indian filmmaker Sohum Shah, who is claiming that his 2009 movie plot has been ripped off by ‘Squid Game’.According to TMZ, he has filed a suit against the streaming platform Netflix and the makers of ‘Squid Game’, alleging that the series borrowed the plot from his Bollywood action thriller ‘Luck‘.
In his lawsuit, Sohum Shah had reportedly alleged that Squid Game writer Hwang Dong-hyuk, who is also being named in case, claimed that he wrote his story in 2009—the same year the film “Luck” was released. According to TMZ, the filmmaker claims that due to “considerable advertising and marketing”, the makers of Squid Game had access to the narrative of Luck and ended up making the series in 2018-2019.
Luck narrates the story of a group of desperate, indebted individuals who participate in a series of competitive games which promises substantial fianncial gains to its winners. The characters only discover that losing any challenge results in death once they begin competing. The naraative of wealthy onlookers gambling on the contestants and the death participants leading to a spike in the prize money are subplots reportedly seen in Luck as well as Squid Game. According to TMZ, Sohum Shah has claimed that the market value of the streaming platform increased by over $900 million post the success of Squid Game he plans to ask a share, while also suing them for infringing his Luck copyright.
Upon its release in 2021, Squid Game emerged as the streaming site’s most-watched show, garnering 1.65 billion viewing hours in just the first four weeks alone. Squid Game 2 is all set to premiere on December 26.
