Subhash Ghai, who is known for delivering superhits like ‘Taal’, ‘Ram Lakhan’, and ‘Pardes’, has now discussed nepotism in Bollywood, citing Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan as examples of successful people who rose to prominence on their own.
During a conversation with The Invincibles Series with Arbaaz Khan, the director talked about the insider vs outsider debate and stated that an actor’s career is determined by the public, not by their family.Ghai said success is determined by merit and the audience. Citing a number of star kids who never made it big, he revealed that the list is lengthy.
Ghai also emphasized that it is incorrect to criticize certain successful star kids for encouraging nepotism in the industry because every actor needs to put in a lot of work. The director said that the star child’s only privilege is the chance to visit the film set and feel its atmosphere since their childhood.
He shared, “Wo har ghar mein hota hai, lawyer ke family mein honge ya doctor ki family mein. Competition mein wo apne merit pe hi aayega. Agar Salman Khan bana hai toh apni merit pe aaya. Shah Rukh bahar se aaya toh merit pe bana.”
For the unversed, Ghai has collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan in his 1997 directorial venture, ‘Pardes’. The film also starred Mahima Chaudhary, Amrish Puri, and Apoorva Agnihotri. On the other hand, Ghai and Salman have worked together in the 2008 movie ‘Yuvvraaj’, co-starring Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, and Zayed Khan.
