In the 1980s and ’90s, Bollywood actor Tabu and director Shekhar Kapur nearly collaborated together on two films, but they never worked together due to bad timing. During a recent conversation, Tabu recounted how Shekhar persuaded her to give up her desire to pursue higher education overseas in order to collaborate with him on the 1995 film ‘Prem’. The director himself quit the project; Satish Kaushik took over as director, even though ‘The Namesake’ actress reluctantly agreed to star in it.
In an interview with The Lallantop, Tabu narrated how she often met Shekhar in the home of her aunt Shabana Azmi during her teenage years. The director chose to cast her in his movie ‘Dushmani’ after seeing her there. Nevertheless, the project was abandoned not long after Tabu decided to play the lead role.
The actress shared, “Shekhar Kapur cast me for Dushmani and I had barely given my 10th exam but he was very sure that he wanted to cast me. So, I came back after giving my 10th exam and he fixed me for the film, I didn’t want to do it at that time but he convinced me but that film was shut down and couldn’t get made. I think it went through a lot changes.”
In the 1995 film ‘Dushmani’, Sunny Deol and Manisha Koirala played the key parts. Bunty Soorma eventually took over as director of the film, despite Shekhar having directed major portions of the film.
Tabu also disclosed that she nearly collaborated with Shekhar Kapur on ‘Prem’ again. The actress stated, “I joined college. So, two years into my college, Shekhar saw me again and said, ‘You will star in Prem.’ I refused because I wanted to go abroad for higher studies but he convinced me. I signed the film and said, ‘I will only do this one film.’ Shekhar convinced me and said bus ek ye film karle (just do this one film) then I will let you go but he himself left the film and ran away. The film went on for 5-6 years and I regretted saying yes to it.”
On the work front, Tabu is gearing up for the release of Ajay Devgn’s film ‘Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha’.
