Tanushree Dutta criticises Hema Committee report, calls it ‘useless’ Filmymeet

The recent release of the Hema Committee report on sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry has ignited a firestorm of reactions. This comprehensive 235-page document, published on August 19, 2024, outlines 17 forms of exploitation faced by women, including alarming issues like pay disparity, rape threats, and unsolicited sexual comments. The committee was established following the 2017 incident involving the sexual assault of a female Malayalam actor in Kochi, with actor Dileep being one of the accused.
Tanushree Dutta, a key figure in India’s #MeToo movement gained significant attention in 2018 when she accused actor Nana Patekar of sexual misconduct on the set of ‘Horn Ok Pleassss’, has now reacted to the Hema Committee report.
In an interview with News18, Tanushree Dutta strongly disapproved of the Hema Committee’s findings, labeling them ineffective. She articulated her frustration, questioning the necessity of such reports after a prolonged seven-year wait for a response to the events of 2017. Dutta remarked, “These committees and reports, I don’t understand them. I think they’re useless.”
The ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ actress further criticized the committee’s efforts by referencing the Vishakha Committee, which was established to prevent workplace sexual harassment. She pointed out that the outcomes have been disappointing despite creating numerous guidelines and reports. “What’s the point of this new report anyway? All they had to do was arrest the accused and enforce a strong law and order system,” she stated.
The report has not only drawn ire from Tanushree but has also prompted reactions from various actors in the Malayalam film industry. Notable figures like Revathy and Ranjini have voiced their opinions, indicating a collective dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs regarding women’s safety in the industry.
The ‘Dhol’ actress’ comments on the personalities involved in these allegations are particularly striking. She described individuals like Nana Patekar and Dileep as “narcissistic psychopaths,” suggesting that their behavior is indicative of a deeper societal issue regarding the treatment of women. “There’s no cure for them. Only a vicious and vengeful man can do what they did,” she asserted.
Moreover, Dutta emphasized her lack of faith in the existing systems designed to protect women. She conveyed a sense of disillusionment, stating that the ongoing reports and committees seem to merely prolong the suffering of victims rather than facilitate justice. “I don’t care about these committees. I have no trust in this system,” she remarked.
