Terence Lewis reveals why Saroj Khan was abusive and rude: 'She had to turn into a man to survive in the industry'

Late choreographer Saroj Khan was renowned not just for her talent but also her outspoken personality. Known for her blunt approach, her directness sometimes appeared aggressive. Recently, choreographer Terence Lewis offered insight into why she had such a tough exterior, adding depth to her already iconic persona in the industry.
During a conversation with Bharti Singh and Harsh Limbachiya on Bharti TV Clips, Terence discussed Saroj Khan’s assertive style in the industry. He explained that working in a male-dominated field required women like Saroj Khan to adopt a tough demeanor. In an industry where resilience is crucial, her directness was likely a survival strategy to establish authority and respect, allowing her to navigate the competitive landscape.

Terence highlighted that female choreographers in Bollywood, facing the pressures of a male-dominated industry, often come across as stricter than their male counterparts. He noted that many female choreographers, adapting to these challenging conditions, tend to be more assertive, sometimes even abrasive, as part of their professional resilience. Harsh Limbachiya chimed in with a nod to Farah Khan, another prominent figure in choreography known for her strong personality.

Lewis continued by explaining that female choreographers often adopt a tough demeanor to assert themselves in the competitive industry. This attitude helps convey that they won’t tolerate disrespect, reinforcing their strength and seriousness in their roles. This approach serves as a reminder to others not to underestimate them, given the intense demands of Bollywood.

Saroj began her journey in Bollywood as a child artist and, later, as a dancer. She initially went by the name Nirmala before adopting Saroj. At 13, she married her mentor, B. Sohanlal, with whom she had three children. After facing challenges, including her husband’s reluctance to recognize their children, she remarried and had another child. Despite personal hardships, she rose to fame as Bollywood’s respected “Masterji,” leaving an enduring legacy through her remarkable choreography and shaping the industry with her talent.
