Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh were married for 13 years, before they decided to part ways. The former couple came close after meeting on the set of Khan’s first film, directed by Rahul Rawail, a friend of Singh. During a photo shoot with the cast, Saif placed his arm around her, catching her attention, as they later shared on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal.
A few days later, Saif gathered the courage to call Amrita, hoping to invite her to dinner. He recalled, “I asked her, ‘Would you like to go out for dinner with me?’ She responded, ‘No, I don’t go out for dinner.’ However, she later said, ‘You can come home for dinner if you like.’” When reflecting on why he reached out to her, Saif mentioned, “Some sort of chord must have struck subconsciously.”
Khan recalled his first dinner date at Amrita’s house, saying, “By the end of the evening, we kissed each other. I never left her house after that dinner.” Their relationship quickly led to marriage, despite Saif being just 21 years old and their 12-year age gap raising eyebrows, even among family.
When Saif broke the news of his secret marriage to Amrita, he shared that his mother, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, was already aware of their relationship. He recalled her words: “I hope you’re happy in your relationship, but don’t get married.” This advice was especially significant considering Saif’s young age.
