While the younger generation may be familiar with Salim Khan as the father of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, Salim and Javed Akhtar established themselves as the writers who gave Hindi cinema its own style in the 1970s, long before the actor gained popularity. Salim and Javed became the most well-known film writers of all time. Salim Khan took up writing for very few projects after Salim-Javed broke up in 1982, and he hasn’t written anything in a while.Salim has not written any of the films for his sons Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail Khan. They have previously stated that they consult with their father about their upcoming films.
The writer of numerous Hindi cinema classics, including Deewar, Trishul, Sholay, and Yaadon Ki Baarat, no longer writes films and gave an explanation for this decision a few years ago. Salim revealed in a 2014 interview with Indu Mirani that when he pitches his ideas to other producers, they will immediately wonder why, if he has pitched a strong script, he isn’t making it with his son Salman.
He shared, “When a person goes to anybody, voh yeh kehta hai ‘saab mere paas badi kamaal ki script hai, aap sun lijiye’. Fir uska pehle khyal yeh aayega ki agar inke paas itni kamaal ki script thi toh inhone apne bete ke sath kyu nahi bana li.”
Salim went on to say that it would be extremely risky if he began working with Salman on every movie.
He said, “Aur fir agar Salman Khan ke saath banata rahu toh ek boht badi risk hai. Hit ho gayi toh unki hai, flop ho gayi toh daddy ki thi (If I keep making movies with Salman Khan, then there is a huge risk. If it is a hit then it is his film, if it’s a flop, then it’s my film).”
Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar were two of the most influential writers of the 1970s. The duo, known for their work on popular films such as Sholay, Deewar, and Zanjeer, split up in 1982. More than 40 years later, they recently reunited for ‘Angry Young Men’, a docu-series that chronicles their journey in Bollywood. While ‘Angry Young Men’ was released on Prime Video in August, the fans of the screenwriting duo are still awaiting their comeback.
