The acclaimed horror-drama has made a remarkable comeback, raking in Rs 13.44 crore net during its re-release at the domestic box office—outpacing its original earnings from 2018.
Tumbbad was re-released in theaters last week due to popular demand from fans. The film added Rs 1.33 crore on Thursday, bringing its seven-day total to Rs 13.44 crore, as announced by Sohum Shah Films in a Friday post. The banner expressed their excitement, stating, “Your love continues to pour in, and we are super thrilled!” According to PTI and Box Office India, the movie originally earned Rs 12.44 crore during its 2018 release.
The film, set in a village in Maharashtra, follows Vinayak Rao (played by Sohum) as he becomes consumed by greed and obsession in his quest for a mythical treasure protected by the sinister entity, Hastar. In a recent interview with PTI, Sohum expressed that the film didn’t connect with audiences “properly” during its 2018 release.
Sohum shared that his social media posts often attract two types of comments: requests for a sequel to Tumbbad and calls for a theatrical re-release of the film. He noted that fans are eager to experience Tumbbad on the big screen again, and he feels grateful for their support, wanting to give them that chance.
